The first image from the upcoming It movie has been unveiled, and it’s a biggie. Indeed, the new Pennywise has been revealed to the public at large with this first-look image, with the new iteration of the character played by Hemlock Grove actor Bill Skarsgard. The new Stephen King adaptation has been in the works for years, with Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) originally set to co-write and direct the project before departing over creative differences. Mama helmer Andy Muscietti is in the director’s chair now, and as filming is currently underway, New Line saw fit to show off their new Pennywise just before next week’s Comic-Con.

The debut image hails from EW, with Skarsgard offering up the following with regards to his take on the terrifying clown character:

“It’s such an extreme character. Inhumane. It’s beyond even a sociopath, because he’s not even human. He’s not even a clown. I’m playing just one of the beings It creates.”

Tim Curry originated the role of Pennywise in the original TV movie adaptation of It, so Skarsgard steps into big shoes. When Fukunaga was attached, Ben Mendelsohn was his first choice to take on the role, but Rogue One scheduling put him out of contention. The Revenant actor Will Poulter then signed on, but after Fukunaga departed, Skarsgard was subsequently cast.

As was Fukunaga’s intention, this It movie is the first of a two-part adaptation of King’s beloved novel. This film will revolve around the characters as kids, when they first encounter Pennywise, while the second movie picks up with them as adults and tells the second half of the story. Take a look at the image below. The film also stars Midnight Special breakout Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff,Chosen Jacobs, and Jeremy Ray Taylor

It opens in theaters on September 8, 2017.
