I'm not sure if I would necessarily even call that first Jack Reacher: Never Go Back trailer that debuted on Entertainment Tonight a real trailer. All that inexplicable narration, and the scraps of scenes that are used, made me tune out immediately. So now, with the release of a full, over-two-minutes trailer this morning via Paramount Pictures, we now have what I would call the first real trailer for the film.

The follow-up finds Tom Cruise' titular character returning to his roots, uncovering duplicitous officials and people of power, until he discovers that the women chosen to take over his role as head of the MP (Cobie Smulders), has been arrested for espionage. Jack Reacher being Jack Reacher, he smells something fishy and the two subsequently find themselves on the run from the law, after a few fights with corrupt military officials and, ya know, assassins.

The film was directed by Edward Zwick, taking the reins from Christopher McQuarrie, who has a hit-or-miss track record, with a lot of decent historical dramas with great actors (last year's Pawn Sacrifice, Glory) and more than a few catastrophes (The Last Samurai, Love & Other Drugs). In all-out action mode though, I think Zwick could really make a solid fight movie, as he has plenty of good-looking movies that simply are too politically timid or weakly constructed to actually stand up toward the tremendous figures and time periods they depict.

Check out the Jack Reacher: Never Go Back trailer below. The film is written by Marshall Herskovitz and Zwick, working from an earlier script by Richard Wenk (The Equalizer). The supporting cast includes Aldis Hodge, Holt McCallany, and Robert Knepper, amongst others. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back opens in theaters on October 21st.
