There was a time when casting stories regarding James Franco used to be surprising. A movie star doing a character arc on General Hospital? Inconceivable! But now, strange project after strange project, general reaction has become âOh sure, of course.â Such is the case with the latest Franco casting story, as THR reports that the actor is in talks to star as a pick-up artist in The Game. Based on the not-at-all chauvinistic memoir by Neil Strauss documenting his efforts to learn the tricks to becoming a successful pick-up artist, the film will center on the protagonistâs efforts to get lucky. Franco is in talks to play âMysteryâ, a man who serves as Straussâ teacher.Solitary Man writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien were recently tapped to rewrite the script, with Chris and Paul Weitz onboard to produce. Franco is also in talks to play another lothario, as he's being eyed to cameo as Hugh Hefner in the biopic Lovelace. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the book.Hereâs the synopsis for The Game:
Are you just another AFC (âaverage frustrated chumpâ) trying to meet an HB (âhot babeâ)? How would you like to âfull-closeâ with a Penthouse Pet of the Year? The answers, my friend, are in Neil Straussâs entertaining book The Game. Strauss was a self-described chick repellantâcomplete with large, bumpy nose, small, beady eyes, glasses, balding head, and, worst of all, painful shyness around women. He felt like âhalf a man.â That is, until a book editor asked him to investigate the community of pickup artists. Straussâs life was transformed. He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North Americaâs most suave gentsâincluding the best of them all, the God of the pickup âcommunity,â a man named Mystery.
Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques heâs turned seduction into an effortless craftâeven inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesmanâs tip sheet: his main rule is FMACâfind, meet, attract, close. He employs the âthree-second ruleââalways approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like âDo you think magic spells work?â or âOh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?â And finally, the most important characteristic of the pickup artistâsmile.
After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. His techniques were actually off-putting to the woman he ended up falling in love with. And they never prepared him for actually having a relationship. After a while, he ran out of one-liners and had to have a real conversation. Still, The Game is a great read that may help some AFCs come out of their shells. [Amazon]
