Somebody over at Universal Pictures clearly has a sense of humor to go along with their penchant for nostalgia. While the newly released trailer for the studio’s thriller Jaws 19 could easily be shrugged off as a silly spoof, fans of Robert Zemeckis’ 1989 sequel Back to the Future Part II should recognize the reference. While Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is enjoying his visit to the future year of 2015 – which explains the current rollout of all things Back to the Future – he soon runs afoul of an aggressive marketing display for Jaws 19 (directed by Max Spielberg) at the local Holomax theater.
While the new trailer from Universal is definitely entertaining, it only exists as a jab at the franchise, a reference to the moment in Back to the Future Part II, and a reminder that the Back to the Future trilogy will be available this month on a special 30th anniversary Blu-ray. So while you’ll likely never get to sit in a holo-theater and enjoy Jaws 19, you’ll soon be able to enjoy a futuristic drink from the utopian world of Back to the Future since Pepsi is rolling out their related Pepsi Perfect product in a few weeks. Personally, I’d be okay with Universal cranking out a few of those Jaws sequels. (Hey, if people are still watching Sharknado movies…) But what my nostalgia addiction is really jonesing for is some Pepsi Perfect. As THR reports, the sodey pop company will unveil the new brand of soft drink – seen in, you guessed it, Back to the Future Part II – on October 21st, the very same day that Marty McFly arrived in the future and ordered the said-same drink. He shelled out $50 for it, making Pepsi’s $20.15 price tag for the real 16.9 oz version seem like a bargain. It will be released online in a limited run of 6,500 bottles, available while supplies last. While the bottle may be new (and perhaps a collector’s item?), the formula will be the same as Pepsi’s current version “Made with Real Sugar.”
“Fans have always been a little crazy about it,” said Lou Arbetter, PepsiCo’s senior director of marketing, “So we wanted to take advantage of the fact that Marty traveled to the future, to this month, and wanted to actually come out with the product.”
