Ever since the first trailer for Jon Chu's Jem and the Holograms dropped, it became apparent that the adaptation of the 80s cartoon would not be exactly what nostalgia-fueled fans had in mind. It's entirely a contemporary take, maybe even a slightly futuristic one if a new character revealed in this latest trailer is any indication. Yeah, there's a robot. A cute little robot who looks a bit like the one from Earth to Echo and BB8 from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If it was just the character itself, I'd say go ahead and dive right into the video, but since it's part of the plot and reveals some spoilery moments, those of you who are irked by that sort of thing might just want to avoid it. It remains to be seen how audiences will respond to this film, but it's clear that it's geared toward influencing a new generation of fans.

Starring Aubrey Peeples as Jerrica/Jem, Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja and Aurora Perrineau as Shana, Jem and the Holograms also stars Molly Ringwald, Ryan Guzman, and Juliette Lewis, and opens October 23rd.
