With the arrival of the Academy Awards in just a few days, it’s already time to look to the next awards show: the Emmys (or television’s Oscar night). While the event is typically held in the fall, usually around September, it appears it’s never too early to start planning. And they aren’t wasting any time, as Variety reports that Jimmy Kimmel is in talks to host this year’s ceremony.

If everything falls into place, this would mark Kimmel’s second time in the role of emcee, which he last served in 2012. Not coincidentally, that was also the last time this year’s broadcaster for the event, ABC, aired the telecast. Kimmel, of course, hosts Jimmy Kimmel Live on the network. The Big Four Networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox) rotate the telecast each year. As is often the case when their turn comes up, the network recruits a host from among their own shows. Fox did it last year with Andy Samberg, and NBC the year before with Seth Meyers. (Interestingly, the networks don’t utilize the same strategy of rotating telecast honors for the Oscars- ABC has that job locked up until 2020).

So ABC is turning to not only one of the network’s most visible stars, but one who has done the gig previously. And he did so to a positive reception. Kimmel’s a fine entertainer with a laid-back style who doesn’t rock the boat too much to get a laugh. The host of any awards show is a pretty thankless job, one where not everyone will be pleased with the performance. But Kimmel is a solid choice who will deliver some laughs, and what more can we expect hosts to do these days?

The ceremony won’t be until September, so there are many months, and lots of television, to get through before then. As to what we can expect, you can check out Kimmel’s opening monologue from the 2012 ceremony below:
