John Cusack Exclusive Video Interview – IGOR

     September 18, 2008

Opening tomorrow is “Igor,” and it’s another animated film aimed at families. But while most animated films are bright and sunny, “Igor” has taken a road less traveled. You see, “Igor” is more of a monster movie, and it’s definitely been influenced by Tim Burton.

The movie takes place in the land of Malaria, and it’s the story of one Igor that’s sick of being a lowly lab assistant. When his cruel and bossy master dies a week before the annual Evil Science Fair, he finally gets his chance to prove he’s much more than just an Igor. With the help of two of his experimental creations – Brain, a brain in a jar who’s a little light on brains, and Scamper, a cynical bunny that can’t die, Igor embarks on building the most evil invention of all time, a huge, ferocious monster. Unfortunately, instead of turning out evil, the monster turns out as Eva, a giant aspiring actress that doesn’t have an activated evil bone. And if that wasn’t enough, he and his band of misfits uncover an evil plot that threatens their world. Now, they must fight to save it and prove that heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

Anyway, I recently got to interview a lot of the voice cast and the interview below is with John Cusack. Since everyone knows who John is and his body of work, I’ll keep this intro very brief.

The thing about John is, he’s been in this game for a long time and he knows how to answer any question thrown his way. I’ve interviewed him before and sometimes he speaks with intensity, and sometimes he’s quiet and I’m not sure the microphone will even pick up what he’s saying. Thankfully, when I sat down in the chair he was very taken with my t-shirt (it’s about the high cost of gasoline) and I think our interview came out pretty good. And in case you’re wondering, John’s the voice of the main character – Igor.

Finally, if you missed the movie clips from “Igor,” you can watch them here. Again, “Igor” arrives in theaters tomorrow.

John Cusack

  • He likes my t-shirt…

  • I ask him about Igor and with the film taking place in the land of Malaria, is that an instant sell for him to make the movie

  • Why did he want to get involved with Igor

  • How long has he been involved with the project and how challenging has it been

  • We talk about the recording process

  • How does he pick his projects and what motivates him

  • I ask if he ever thought he’d make a Roland Emmerich disaster movie as he’s one of the stars of 2012
