In fantastic news, comedian/writer/performer John Mulaney is going to be hosting Saturday Night Live on April 14th, with Jack White joining him as musical guest. Mulaney was a writer on SNL for six seasons, starting in 2008, and he famously co-created and co-wrote the fan-favorite character Stefon with Bill Hader. You heard Mulaney’s name a lot around that time, with many SNL cast members singling him out as a talented comedian in his own right, and after leaving SNL Mulaney developed and starred in his own sitcom Mulaney for FOX. The three-camera series was short-lived, running for a single season of 13 episodes and never getting the time to find its footing.

But Mulaney’s career oddly enough took off after starring in his own sitcom. He began honing his standup with great specials like New in Town, which debuted in 2012, and The Comeback Kid, along with touring. Mulaney also served as a writer on the IFC comedy series Documentary Now! with Hader and Seth Meyers, and he currently serves as a star and consulting producer on the Netflix animated series Big Mouth.

Mulaney is a tremendously talented and funny person, and after years of working behind the scenes at SNL I am delighted to hear that he’ll be hosting the show himself. Mulaney made a long-overdue cameo during Hader’s recent hosting stint, playing Stefon’s lawyer during a Weekend Update segment. I’m curious to see what SNL alums might pop up in Mulaney’s episode on April 14th, and I greatly look forward to seeing Mulaney’s terrific sense of humor front and center for the entire episode.

This news comes on the heels of the revelation that Mulaney’s next standup special, Kid Gorgeous at Radio City, will be premiering on Netflix on May 1st.
