Trust me, once you see John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, you're going to want to talk about the dogs. If the murder of John Wick's (Keanu Reeves) dog is the moment that kicked off the ultraviolent franchise, its third installment is, in every way, the revenge of the dogs. This is mostly thanks to Oscar-winner Halle Berry coming aboard as Sofia, an ex-assassin colleague of John who has a pair of extremely loyal attack dogs that take part in, no joke, one of the most impressive action set pieces I've ever seen.

Before the film's premiere, I sat down with Halle Berry—who, as you can see, was so sick she could barely talk, so shout-out to her for being there in the first place—and director Chad Stahelski to discuss training the dogs to perform complex choreographed stunts, and why Sofia's dogs seem to always for a, uh, sensitive part of the human anatomy. Check out what he had to say in the player above, and below is exactly what we talked about.

  • What was the movie's sugar glass budget? (John Wick 3 breaks a lot of glass.)
  • How Berry was involved in the actual training for the dogs so that they'd actually be responding to her voice while filming.
  • The hardest sequence to pull off while filming with the dogs.
  • Whether the fact that the dogs in the film usually attack the bad guys' groin is a practical choice or something to do with the storytelling.

Here is the official synopsis for John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum:

In this third installment of the adrenaline-fueled action franchise, super-assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) returns with a $14 million price tag on his head and an army of bounty-hunting killers on his trail. After killing a member of the shadowy international assassin’s guild, the High Table, John Wick is excommunicado, but the world’s most ruthless hit men and women await his every turn.
