Jurassic World, which now holds the third highest-grossing domestic box-office take of all time, below Avatar and Titanic, is a movie with more than a few problems, like most movies that bring in that kind of money. As fun and energetic as the film proved to be in total, the amount of issues that the script brings on is frankly innumerable, and I'm not just talking about the rampant sexism and shallow character development. And yet, the exuberance that director Colin Trevorrow brings to the film, which was released on DVD and Blu-ray this week, was enough to make for an enjoyable and truly brainless entertainment. In anticipation of the release, Universal has put out a deleted scene from the film, which features Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard covering themselves in dinosaur excrement in the hopes of throwing off the scent of the dinosaurs.

Now, I'm trying very hard to not make a joke about Jurassic World and mounds of crap, so bear with me here. There is, ultimately, something mildly interesting about Pratt's character in Trevorrow's film, as he is a kind of model broad-chested adventure hero, the kind of character Clark Gable might have played. Pratt does well with the role, as shoddy as it is, but the archetype also eliminates much of what makes Pratt such a natural leading man, which is his own humorous, self-deprocating persona. It's at least partially why Guardians of the Galaxy resonates emotionally whereas Jurassic World proves barely memorable five minutes after you've seen it. Pratt covering himself in the droppings of a alpha-predator isn't exactly the right venue for a striking emotional scene, but even here, the strain to be more condescending and snarky about the way he delivers lines can be felt and makes you wonder why this was the decision made by the filmmakers and producers, amongst other elements of Jurassic World.
