Back in August, we reported that a number of actresses were in the running to star in one of two lead female roles opposite Tom Cruise in Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi pic Horizons (the project has also been referred to as Oblivion, but every story seems to go back and forth on what the title is). Jessica Chastain eventually won the role, and since “shortlist” and “reading with” stories are all the rage, three actresses are now apparently poised to read for the other lead role with Cruise this weekend: Kate Beckinsale, Diane Kruger, and Captain America’s Hayley Atwell. Hit the jump for more.oblivion-comic-book-coverThe film was originally set up at Disney, but when they realized that the $100 million sci-fi pic didn’t exactly fit with their family film mold, they allowed Kosinski to shop the project to other studios. Universal eventually agreed to finance the pic, and now production is set to begin early next year for a July 2013 release date. The story takes place in an apocalyptic future that finds humans living in clouds above the uninhabitable Earth. Cruise plays a soldier who is left behind to stay on the planet and work on drones that seek out and destroy a savage alien life form. The two lead female roles are a mysterious traveler who crash lands on Earth much to Cruise’s surprise, and Cruise’s wife. Deadline reports that Beckinsale, Kruger, and Atwell are up for the role of the mysterious traveler, so that means Chastain will be playing the wife of the protagonist. There’s really not a bad choice in this trio of actresses, but my personal pick would be Beckinsale. It’d be interesting to see her tackle something more on the drama side.
