In Black or White, the new film from director Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger), Kevin Costner plays Elliot Anderson, a man who has just lost his wife (after losing his daughter tragically some years before) and is now embroiled in a court battle with Rowena Jeffers (Octavia Spencer) for custody of his grandchild, Eloise (Jillian Estell).  Be sure to check out the trailer for the film and yesterday's interview with Octavia Spencer.

I recently had a chance to sit down with Costner to talk about Black or White.  We covered what it was like working with Mike Binder again and the fact that Costner helped finance the film himself because it otherwise wouldn't have gotten made (he says Hollywood was similarly reticent to get involved with classics like Dances With Wolves).  We also touch on the film's depiction of alcohol abuse.  Check out the interview below.  The film also stars Anthony MackieGillian Jacobs, and Jennifer Ehle.  It's in theaters now.

Here's the official synopsis for Black or White:

BLACK OR WHITE is the story of a grandfather (Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner) who is suddenly left to care for his beloved granddaughter. When the little girl’s paternal grandmother (Academy Award® nominee Octavia Spencer) seeks custody, a legal battle ensues that forces the families to confront their true feelings on race, forgiveness and understanding. Anchored by an all-star cast and based on real events, the movie is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.
