Paramount Pictures has released a new clip for Alan Taylor’s (Thor: The Dark World) Terminator: Genisys. The latest entry in the Terminator franchise flips the established cannon on its head when future John Connor (Jason Clarke) sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back in time to the year 1983 in order to save his mother (Emilia Clarke) from assassination. However, unlike previous films, when Reese arrives in the past he finds Sarah more than able to take care of herself and under the protection of a friendly T-800.

Ever since Paramount released the trailer that revealed John Connor's unexpected role in the new alt-universe Terminator, I've been a bit more interested how the film will play with our expectations of the this universe. I kind of like what's going on in this brief clip, there's a nice throwback vibe and some genuine tension. I especially like the small touch of Kyle making sure the shoes are the right size before he grabs them. It's a nice practical detail.

I can't say I'm as thrilled with Emilia Clarke's delivery of the T-800's iconic line. That may have looked like a fun twist on paper, but it doesn't play on screen. Either Clarke couldn't nail the delivery or the editing steals all the fun, because the camera actually cuts away from her as she's saying it. It should be a big hero moment, but it plays very small. In any case, I like this clip more than anything else we've seen from the film so far, so maybe there's hope for Genisys yet.
