The first trailer for the spiritual drama Last Days in the Desert has been released online by Broad Green Pictures. Written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia, the film imagines Jesus’ forty days of fasting and praying in the desert, as he comes across a family in crisis and struggles with the Devil. Ewan McGregor plays both the Son of God and the Devil in the picture, which is a curious and sure-to-be-divisive film (read Brian's review here). I caught the movie at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and while it’s certainly unique, with an unforgettable final shot, the pacing could be trying for those that have a hard time with slow movies.

Three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who’s coming off the spectacular The Revenant, served as the director of photography on the drama and his work is indeed pretty magnificent as he captures the loneliness and alienation of the desert. Ciaran Hinds proves to be a formidable foil for McGregor as the father of the family in peril, with future X-Men: Apocalypse Cyclops Tye Sheridan and Man of Steel actress Ayelet Zurer playing the son and mother, respectively. All in all this is a fascinating film that's definitely worth seeing, but I’m curious to see how it will be received.

Here’s the official synopsis for Last Days in the Desert:

Last Days in the Desert follows Jesus (Ewan McGregor) in an imagined chapter from his forty days of fasting and praying in the desert. On his way out of the wilderness, he struggles with the Devil, also played by McGregor, over the fate of an ordinary family in crisis, setting for himself a dramatic test with distinctly human conflicts.
