ABC is continuing the trend set forth by its broadcast brethren to air some of their Fall pilots online before their official premiere dates.  NBC did it with Revolution, and CBS has done it with Elementary, so now ABC is in the game offering up their military drama Last Resort to online viewers.

Last Resort was created by Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and stars Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street) and Scott Speedman (Felicity) as two Navy officers who refuse a mysterious order to fire missiles at Pakistan, making their submarine an enemy of the state.  For more on the series and to watch the premiere episode, hit the jump.

After the rogue officers refuse their orders and are officially on the run from the U.S. government, they set up camp on the island of Sainte Marina and stand their ground (so like Lost meets Mr Smith Goes to Sainte Marina).  The series looks like it'll dabble a little bit in politics, a little bit in emotion, and a lot in explosions and tactical situations.  Bring on the popcorn!

With such a competitive slate of returning shows, maybe the networks are trying to give people more time to gander at their pilots by releasing them early.  Could it be a response to cynical viewers' reluctance to commit to new shows in case they get cancelled (a.k.a. The Firefly Effect)?

As for Last  Resort, judge for yourselves whether it belongs in the "must see" or "must DV-R" list, or on any at all.  Check out the full pilot below (via Yahoo!):

Last Resort is scheduled to premiere officially on Thursday, September 27th at 8pm on ABC. last-resort-poster
