The fall premiere of Law & Order: Los Angeles is fast approaching, so it's about time that NBC and creator Dick Wolf found a lead in Skeet Ulrich (Jericho).  The actor will play Detective Rex Winters, one of five main characters on the LA procedural that hews closely to the established  Law & Order format: two detectives, a  captain, a prosecutor, and his assistant.  You can find a more detailed character description after the jump.

Deadline provided the following outline for the character:

"Detective Rex Winters [is] a handsome, rugged former Marine with the intuition of a natural cop.  Winters was 6 weeks on the job when the Rodney King riots occurred, which shaped his entire policy of policing.  His personal life is a bit of a mess: his first marriage ended when he had an affair - with his former partner, to whom he is now married."

"Detective Rex Winters" is a pretty great name for a TV character.  Makes me think of Max Power.

After the hubbub that surrounded the cancellation of the L&O mothership, and subsequent rumors that it might continue elsewhere (the latest talk ties it to AMC), Ulrich is an interesting choice.  The actor headlined the apocalyptic Jericho, which CBS cancelled after one season.  The network famously revived the show in response to a fan campaign which sent twenty tons of nuts to CBS headquarters (umm... it's an inside joke).  Maybe if Law & Order fans sent NBC twenty tons of... I don't know... gavels?  badges?  order?

LOLA is the sixth series to premiere under the brand name, which has been a presence on television for nearly twenty years since Law & Order's 1990 premiere.  The original flavor and Trial By Jury are no longer in production, but LOLA will be joined by L&O: SVU, L&O: Criminal Intent, and British cousin L&O: UK once it premieres fall 2010.
