The CW has just released the first trailer for its upcoming series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, a spinoff of both the Arrow and Flash universes. The show focuses on a team of superheroes made up of familiar faces from the DC TV Universe, including Brandon Routh‘s Atom, Victor Garber‘s Martin Stein, Caity Lotz‘s Canary (of a new color), Dominic Purcell‘s Heat Wave, Wentworth Miller‘s Captain Cold, and now Hawkgirl (Ciarra Renee) and Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill).

First of all … this looks totally nuts. I thought The Flash took things to a new level by bringing in Eobard and Grodd so soon, but Legends is going all-in from the start. No big deal, guys, we’re just fighting crime through time. Check it out for yourself:

Let’s break down the introductions, first:

  • Hawkgirl: “A girl with wings and a past lives complex.” This may become a theme…
  • White Canary: “A deceased assassin.” Who has been resurrected!
  • Captain Cold and Heat Wave: “A pair of criminals.”
  • The Atom: “A billionaire with more than than he clearly knows what to do with.” (He disagrees).
  • Firestorm: Martin Stein, who says “I’m half a hero, and my other half is combustible.” Yeah, where exactly is Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) in all of this?
  • Rip Hunter: “I’m from Easy London. And the future.” He’s also a member of the Time Masters, who are charged with protecting history itself.
  • Vandal Savage: An immortal enemy who’s been alive for thousands of years and commands the biggest army in the world. Great.

Captain Cold, naturally, is skeptical about this whole “hero” thing, but Rip Hunter plays up to his ego by assuring him that they aren’t just viewed as heroes in the future, but legends.

Frankly, I wasn’t that excited for this series until this trailer. It seemed just like a random assortment of second-tier characters. But the immortal enemy / time traveling ass-kicking plot seems pretty badass, and I’m looking forward to the potential for more crossovers among all of the CW’s DC series. Also, this last episode of The Flash helped established Captain Cold (and Miller’s James Spader impersonation) as one of this universe’s better characters. Pretty excited to see where all of this goes, and how these characters all interact together.

Here is the official synopsis for the show:

“DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW”

When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends.  Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat — one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself.  Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known? DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW stars Victor Garber (“The Flash,” “Alias”); Brandon Routh (“Arrow,” “Superman Returns”); Arthur Darvill (“Doctor Who”); Caity Lotz (“Arrow”); Ciarra Renee (“Pippin”); Franz Drameh (“Edge of Tomorrow”); with Dominic Purcell (“The Flash,” “Prison Break”); and Wentworth Miller (“The Flash,” “Prison Break”). Based on the characters from DC Comics, DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” upcoming “Pan”), Marc Guggenheim (“Arrow,” “Eli Stone,” “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”), Andrew Kreisberg (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Eli Stone,” “Warehouse 13”) and Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” upcoming “Pan”).
