The LEGO Batman Movie continues to add big names to its itty-bitty plastic cast, even when the characters in question are from the supporting side. One of those roles is the iconic butler to the Wayne Family, Alfred Pennyworth. Bruce Wayne/Batman would have a hard time keeping up his dual life as a billionaire crimefighter without Alfred, who will be voiced by Ralph Fiennes. Variety originally reported on this very apt pairing, but today saw the announcement of a new casting assignment that was a little stranger.

Deadline first reported that Mariah Carey was in talks to join The LEGO Batman Movie as the voice of Commissioner Gordon. While that was a bit of a head-scratcher at first, changing the gender of the Commissioner wouldn't necessarily have changed the story all that dramatically. But now as THR reports, Carey is actually in talks to play Gotham's mayor:

A gender-swapped Commissioner Gordon would have been an odd choice, especially with a voice like Carey's in the role, but the above-mentioned correction makes more sense. Perhaps we'll get to see Gotham's mayor belt out a song alongside the Caped Crusaders?

As for the rest of The LEGO Batman Movie's cast, Will Arnett voices the title character, with Michael Cera as Batman’s sidekick Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker. Chris McKay, who acted as Animation Supervisor on The LEGO Movie, directs this spin-off film from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith. There are few details available on the plot of the movie at this point except to say that it centers around one philosophical question: Can Batman ever be happy? We’ll find out for sure when The LEGO Batman movie opens on February 10, 2017.
