A movie based on LEGOs probably shouldn't have worked in the first place, so you'd imagine that a sequel to a movie based on LEGOs wouldn't stand a chance. And yet here we are, it's 2019, Phil Lord and Chris Miller are miracle workers, and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is an unadulterated delight. The film picks up five years after The LEGO Movie and everything is decidedly not awesome in Bricksburg. LEGO DUPLO from the great beyond have invaded—led by Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi (Tiffany Haddish) and her incredibly named henchman General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz)—and Emmet (Chris Pratt), Lucy (Elizabeth Banks), Batman (Will Arnett), Metalbeard (Nick Offerman), Benny (Charlie Day), and Unikitty (Alison Brie) will have to travel to the furthest reaches of the house galaxy to stop it. Mike Mitchell directs from a script by Lord and Miller.
Before The LEGO Movie 2 hits theaters, I sat down with Chris Miller and Phil Lord to discuss the film. We also discussed making movies from ideas that absolutely should not work on paper, which part of the story was the hardest to crack, their favorite LEGO cameos (shoutout to Ruth Bader Ginsburg), and a lot more.
