Hot on the heels of Fox’s announcement that Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse will now open in 2014 as opposed to July 3rd, 2013, Disney has swooped in and grabbed the holiday weekend for director Gore Verbinski’s big screen iteration of The Lone Ranger.  Armie Hammer stars as the titular hero, with Depp taking on the legendary sidekick in grand fashion.  The film will now be up against Independence Day 3D and Despicable Me 2.

Additionally, Thor 2 has been moved up one week to November 8th.  The film faced no competition as of yet on the November 15th weekend, but Lionsgate’s sure-to-be-massive sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens on the 22nd so Marvel is giving Thor 2 a chance to have some legs.  The film will now open against DreamWorks Animation’s Me and My Shadow and the One Direction Concert Movie (oh boy!).  Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) is onboard to direct with production set to get underway in London in a few months.

Fox has pushed Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters back all the way to August from a previous March 15th date.  The film currently faces no opposition on its opening weekend, but opens one week after Sony’s Robocop remake.  The majority of the first film’s cast returns, led by Logan Lerman, but Thor Freudenthal takes over directing duties from Harry Potter helmer Chris Columbus.

Ben Stiller’s currently filming remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has been given a coveted Christmas Day release date for 2013.   Stiller also stars in the film alongside an impressive cast that includes Kristin Wiig, Adam Scott, Shirley MacLaine and Patton Oswalt.  The only other film currently slated for Christmas 2013 is the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.

Finally, the recently announced comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy has been given an April 5th, 2013 release date.  The “buddy cop” movie will be directed by Paul Feig and centers on the strained working relationship between a high-strung FBI agent (Bullock) and an unconventional Boston cop who team up to take down a Russian gangster.
