Much like the late, great author J.R.R. TolkienThe Lord of the Rings, who began his journey through Middle-earth with a map, so too has Amazon opted to begin their foray into the fantasy landscape with a series of cartographic teasers familiar to many a fan. Though few details have yet to emerge for their live-action series, today’s release may be the best one yet when it comes to giving us a timeline for the story. From “The Silmarillion”, to “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books themselves, Tolkien’s fantasy epic covers thousands of other-worldly years, but it looks like the upcoming series may cover the time period known as the Second Age, at the very least.
While I’m a bit rusty on my LotR lore, the Second Age covers the time just after the banishment of the first Dark Lord, Melkor/Morgoth, into the Void by the Valar. Spanning nearly 3500 years, this age ends with the defeat of Sauron (and the destruction of his physical form) by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men (with a few dwarves thrown in for good measure). But don’t get confused; this “Last Alliance” is the one seen in flashbacks from the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, which sets the stage for Sauron’s eventual return and defeat in the subsequent War of the Ring that ended the Third Age. In other words, get ready to explore the lands and people of Arda in a time before any story that has yet to be seen on the big or small screens. And yes, this new series should include the first look at the island kingdom of Men, Númenor.
