Lots of New Sony DVD Announcements

     April 10, 2007

Recently Sony has announced a number of great new DVD titles and I’m posting them all below. While some of them have their cover art, some do not. The reason is pretty simple: Sony has not released it yet.

So while a lot of us would love to see the Silver Spoons artwork or What’s Happening Now! we’ll have to wait a bit longer. But I’m happy Silver Spoons is hitting DVD as I grew up with the reruns of that show. All I vividly remember are all the video games in the living room where they lived and how it made me jealous. Where I grew up arcades were hard to come by and having the games in your home was mind warping. Yes I was a complete geek, and I still wear the badge proudly.

Anyway some great stuff below like a Meatballs special edition and a new season of Seinfeld. Look for more DVD cover art and info all week.

Features Digitally Remastered Footage, Special Documentary Titled “Summer Camp: The Making of Meatballs,” and Director’s Commentary, All on DVD June 5, 2007

MEATBALLS which opens with the line, “Is everyone ready for summer?” and features fellow Canadian Bill Murray in his first starring role, is another of Reitman’s big screen laugh-a-thons and a blockbuster hit back in the summer of 1979.

MEATBALLS has been digitally re-mastered under the supervision of Ivan Reitman for the optimum picture and sound. This special edition DVD is stacked with first time extras, including a bonus “making of” documentary, titled “Summer Camp: The Making of Meatballs,” and a highly-entertaining director’s commentary.

Filmed on location at an actual summer camp, Camp White Pine, located just north of Toronto, and using many of the camp’s actual enrollees and counselors as extras, MEATBALLS rolls out 90-plus minutes worth of old school belly laughs and spotlights the quirky yet endearing comedy genius of Bill Murray.

As with Reitman’s multiple comedy features, MEATBALLS is sheer entertainment, capturing a succession of comedy capers at a typical summer camp, cheerfully championed by the chief counselor, Bill Murray, whose character is a fun loving prankster who loves the ladies and takes us back to a time when going to camp was a much awaited summer ritual loaded with laughs, goofy campfire charades, zany camp games and first time adventures. MEATBALLS catapulted Oscar-nominated Murray, who later starred in “Ghostbusters,” the biggest grossing comedy of all time, to comedy film legend. Murray went on to headline a succession of big screen hits, including “Lost in Translation”, “Stripes” and “Caddyshack.”

The wackiest head counselor in North Star camp history, Tripper Harrison (Bill Murray) devotes his summer activities to cracking jokes, chasing female staffers, and plotting the demise of their evil rich rivals, the snotty young brats at nearby Camp Mohawk. Jam-packed with hysterical off-the-wall hi-jinks, drop-dead gorgeous babes in the woods and riotous one-liners of the one-and-only Bill Murray, MEATBALLS is an “Animal House goes to summer camp.”

Street Date June 19th

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment celebrates the 25th anniversary of one of the most popular sitcoms of the ‘80s with the June 19 DVD debut of Silver Spoons: The Complete First Season. Starring Ricky Schroder (The Champ), Joel Higgins (TV’s “Bare Essence”), and Erin Gray (TV’s “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century”), the DVD includes all 22 episodes in a three-disc boxed set. The DVD will be available for $29.95 SRP.

When Silver Spoons began its five-season, 115-episode run for NBC on September 25, 1982, the show turned 12-year-old, Golden Globe®-winner Ricky Schroder into an instant teen heartthrob. With his blond, clean-cut, all-American good looks, Schroder dominated the pages of teen magazines in the early-to-mid ‘80s, won two Young Artist Awards as best actor for the series, and inspired a devoted fan base that continues to support his acting career into adulthood (TV’s “NYPD Blue,” “24”).

The series depicted every kid’s wildest fantasy. When Ricky Stratton (Schroder) is reunited with his long-lost father Edward (Higgins), Dad turns out to be a young-at-heart, “overgrown kid” who owns a multinational toy company empire and has turned his mansion into a veritable playground complete with a scale model freight train that runs throughout the house. The role reversal inherent in the show found Ricky more mature than his father, but under Ricky’s influence, Edward eventually matures, while Edward inspires Ricky to act more like a kid.

The storylines of Silver Spoons were mainly light situations regarding classic boyhood mischief and the misunderstandings surrounding a father and son getting to know one another. However, in periodic “very special episodes” during the first season, the series dealt with tougher issues including schoolyard bullies and kidnapped children. Guest stars included Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct, Casino), Mr. T (Rocky III, TV’s “The A Team,” “I Pity the Fool”), Joseph Lawrence (AKA Joey, TV’s “Blossom,” “Dancing with the Stars”), Gary Coleman (TV’s “Diff’rent Strokes”), and, in a recurring role as Ricky’s best friend, Jason Bateman (TV’s “Arrested Development”).

From Sony Pictures Home Entertainment comes the fantasy thriller Blood and Chocolate May 29 on DVD, Blu-ray Disc® and Sony Playstation® Portable (PSP). Based on the popular young adult novel by Annette Curtis Klause and from the producers of Underworld and The Covenant, Blood and Chocolate is the story of Vivian Gandillon, a young girl caught between two worlds – a human world by day and the life of a werewolf by night. Actress Agnes Bruckner (Dreamland, The Woods) portrays Vivian, whose life is turned upside down after meeting artist and relics researcher Aiden Galvin, played by Hugh Dancy (Basic Instinct 2, King Arthur). When the protector and controller of Vivian’s pack, Gabriel, played by Olivier Martinez (Unfaithful, S.W.A.T.), becomes aware of Vivian’s new friendship with Galvin, she realizes she must decide whether to follow her heart or betray the secret vow of her family. Blood and Chocolate is full of deleted scenes and will keep viewers guessing until the end. The DVD will retail for $28.95 SRP, the Blu-ray Disc for $38.96 SRP and for PSP at $28.95 SRP.

As a young girl living in the remote mountains of Colorado, Vivian (Bruckner) watched helplessly as her family was murdered by a pack of angry men for the secret they carried in their blood. Vivian survived the attack by running into the woods and changing into a wolf. Ten years later, Vivian is living a relatively safe and normal life in Bucharest, Romania. Vivian spends her days working in a chocolate shop and nights trawling the city’s underground clubs, fending off the reckless antics of her cousin Rafe, and his gang of delinquents he refers to as “The Five.”

Vivian’s life begins to unravel when she has a chance encounter with Aiden (Dancy), an artist researching Bucharest’ ancient art and relics for his next graphic novel. Aiden pursues Vivian until she relents and begins to see him, but she can’t bring herself to tell him the truth – and lives in fear of showing him who she really is. Even though Vivian has sworn never to kill, she is as much an animal as she is human, and her love for Aiden threatens to cast him to the very wolves who saved her life and who are waiting for their chance to hunt him as prey.
