Amid the announcements from the Television Critics Association events was word that Netflix is spending $6 billion on content this year. Let me repeat that. Six. Billion. Dollars. That includes more of what we love, like Orange Is the New Black and Daredevil, but also new original binges like Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down and the animated Kong: King of the Apes. Among the latter platter of content is a project from Judd Apatow (Trainwreck) called Love.
Following the premiere announcement of all 10 episodes on February 19th, Netflix dropped an extended trailer featuring its stars Gillian Jacobs (Community) and Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper). While the streaming service also released short video profiles of their characters, nice guy movie lover Gus and wild gal Mickey, the trailer sees their unconventional friendship blossom as they each navigate the uneasy ground of love, intimacy, and commitment.

While Mickey dodges passes from her co-worker and gets called a whore at a party, Gus moves out the final boxes filled with Blu-rays (not DVDs, damn it!) from his now ex-girlfriend’s house. The two subsequently share pot and bemoan the lies movies like Sweet Home Alabama feed them about love as they realize “relationships are fucking bullshit.”
Speaking from TCA, Apatow said, “In a TV show, you’re allowed to show all the nuance, and show happy moments and moments in melancholy. It’s much more truthful, because you don’t have to tie it up with a bow.”

LOVE follows Gus and Mickey as they navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, and other things they were hoping to avoid. Having recently ended their respective dysfunctional relationships, Gus and Mickey meet each other by chance at a convenience store and forge a connection in the mending of their broken hearts and egos.
