While at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival I landed an exclusive video interview with Luke Evans. He was in town promoting his work in Kill List and Sightseers director Ben Wheatley’s new movie High Rise. In the film, adapted from the J.G. Ballard novel of the same name, Evans plays Elizabeth Moss’ husband. His character exists in a very chaotic world filled with drugs, booze and sex as Wheatley chronicles class warfare in the confines of a 1970s-set apartment building. Trust me, you’ve never seen Evans play a role like this before.

During the interview, Evans talked about his reaction to reading the script and meeting Wheatley to talk about the role, memorable moments from filming, and he reveals the secret to getting a director to hire you. Check out what he had to say below and you can also click here for what he had to say about making Bill Condon’s live-action Beauty and the Beast movie.

Luke Evans Time Index:

  • 0:15 – Gives advice on how to have a successful film festival.
  • 1:02 – Talks about his reaction to reading the script and meeting Ben Wheatley to talk about the role.
  • 2:25 – Reveals the secret to getting a director to hire you for the role.
  • 3:30 – Talks about a few moments from filming that he’ll never forget.

Here’s the synopsis for High Rise via TIFF:

1975. Two miles west of London, Dr. Laing moves into his new apartment seeking soulless anonymity, only to find that the building’s residents have no intention of leaving him alone. Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. The lights go out and the elevators fail but the party goes on. People are the problem. Booze is the currency. Sex is the panacea. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss.
