The first two Macbeth clips have landed online. For those who decided to skip their high school lit classes, Shakespeare’s play is about the eponymous general (Michael Fassbender) who, with the help of his wife/co-conspirator (Marion Cotillard) murders the king and takes the throne only to be overtaken by paranoia and madness. It’s an uplifting tale that’s fun for the whole family.

These clips don’t show any of Shakespeare’s dialogue, and instead focus on Justin Kurzel’s impressive direction. This is going to be a very stylized Macbeth, and I really like the tone he’s going for. It’s foreboding, unnerving, and looks like it will fit well with the tenor of the play.

Check out the Macbeth clips below. The film will premiere at Cannes before opening in the U.K. on October 2nd and in France on November 4th. It’s possible (or at least I’m hoping) that the movie will play at TIFF or Telluride this fall to get into the Oscar race. Macbeth also stars Sean Harris, Paddy Considine, David Thewlis, Jack Reynor, and Elizabeth Debicki.

Here’s the official synopsis for Macbeth:

MACBETH is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader (Michael Fassbender) brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition, set in war torn Scottish landscape.
