Tom Hanks may want to seriously consider ever going into space.  His character in Apollo 13 didn't even make it to the moon, and he and his crew had to defy the odds to make it safely back to Earth.  Last summer, we reported that director Robert Zemeckis was in talks to re-team with Hanks for Major Matt Mason, a 3D film adaptation based on the popular 1960s astronaut action figure.  But it doesn't sound like things will be any easier for Major Mason.  Screenwriter Graham Yost (FX's Justified) revealed new details on the upcoming adventure film.

Yost tells Reuters (via The Playlist),

"The story is set on the moon, near future, and it's a team of people on a base on the moon, on the south pole of the moon. And of course everything goes wrong. There's no bad guys. There's no aliens. Nothing like that. It's just, can you survive? It's really fun, and it's just been a blast working with Tom on that. We had such a good time on 'From Earth to the Moon' that it's sort of like, 'We've got to go back to the moon. Some way, somehow, let's go back to the moon.'"

It seems like it's a bad time for anyone to go into space.  Later this year we'll see Sandra Bullock struggling to get back to Earth in Alfonso Cuaron's 3D sci-fi drama Gravity.  And as we saw last year in Apollo 18 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the moon is ripe with aliens.  It's a good thing we're not going there any more.

We also shouldn't expect to see Major Matt Mason any time in the near future.  Yost continues,

"Who knows what's going to happen with that, because Tom is very busy now acting in a bunch of things. I think he's doing 'Cloud Atlas' now over in Europe, [and then] I think probably going into the Maersk Alabama thing (Somalian pirate drama 'Captain Phillips,' directed by Paul Greengrass). So we'll see if it happens. I hope it does, because we both love lunar exploration."

As for Zemeckis, he's currently at work on the Denzel Washington drama Flight so I wouldn't expect to see Major Matt Mason get in front of cameras until the end of the year at the earliest (this is assuming Zemeckis decided to sign on).
