Maleficent is one of the most iconic Disney villains we’ve got, but she can’t carry a feature film on reputation alone.  Maleficent scribe, Linda Woolverton, had to figure out a way to turn her into a main character that the audience could connect to and care about, and in order to do that, she had to come up with a convincing reason for why Maleficent would place a curse on an infant child.

Hit the jump for an exclusive Maleficent Blu-ray clip detailing how Woolverton came up with the idea to turn the character into a fairy and then strip her of her wings.  The movie stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Lesley Manville, Imedla Staunton, Juno Temple, Sam Riley and Brenton Thwaites, and hits DVD and Blu-ray on November 4th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Maleficent:

“Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.
