First Trailer and New Images for Disney’s MALEFICENT Starring Angelina Jolie

     November 13, 2013

Disney has released the first teaser trailer for Maleficent.  Directed by Robert Stromberg, the film is a reimagining of the classic Sleeping Beauty story told from the villain’s point of view.  Angelina Jolie plays Maleficent, a beautiful, pure-hearted young woman who becomes the protector of her village when an invading army threatens its harmony.  Following a brutal betrayal, Maleficent becomes bent on revenge and her pure heart begins to turn to stone, paving the way for the story that plays out in Sleeping Beauty. This first trailer is very much a teaser in that we only get quick glimpses of Jolie as the titular character, with the focus actually turning to Elle Fanning as the young Aurora.  It’s very clear from this trailer that the film will be in the vein of Disney’s other CG-heavy fantasy pics Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful (Stromberg served as production designer on both), but I’m interested to see how the arc of Jolie’s character plays out.

Here’s the official synopsis for Maleficent:

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.
