Screenwriter Mark Protosevich entered the world of comic book adaptations with a screenplay credit for Marvel Studios' Thor, and it feels homey enough that he's thinking of settling down for awhile.  Variety reports Protosevich has signed on to bring the upcoming Ape Entertainment comic series Freakshow to the big screen.  The scribe is considering Freakshow as a vehicle for his directorial debut; he will produce with Jennifer Klein (Pearl Harbor) and Sheldon Turner, who recently earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the Up in the Air script.  Hit the jump to learn a bit more about the source material.

Created by David Server and Jackson Lanzing (with art from Marvel regular Joe Suitor), Freakshow will debut in January 2011 as a three-issue miniseries.  Here's a brief outline courtesy of the Freakshow production blog:

The three-issue limited series follows the story of five mutated survivors after a devastating chemical explosion, which has left the world’s only superhero dead and his city trapped in a dangerous and mysterious quarantine. In the wake of the disaster, these five refugees must decide whether to use their powerful but defective new abilities to save the remains of the city or extract their revenge on those responsible.

Ape Entertaintment will bring the property to Comic-Con with plans to sell advance issues to atendees.

Protosevich's last script to see theaters was the 2007 Will Smith-starrer I Am Legend, while Thor is set for release on May 6, 2011.  In addition to Freakshow, Protosevich is currently working on an adaptation of the video game Mass Effect.
