Showtime has just released a promo spot for Masters of Sex Season 3, and things seem to be getting even more complicated and melodramatic than last season, which got pretty hairy starting with "Fight!" and only got more complex from there. There's a sense here of a small, independent operation of researchers going into the big time, taking their research and their radical findings on tour to present them to curious citizens nation wide and, possibly, worldwide. The drama will seemingly be spurred by a disagreement between the heads of the researchers on whether or not their job has been done to a satisfactory level, to say nothing of whether or not the public has the capacity to understand their findings or can respect their evidence beyond their own beliefs and prejudices. At one point, a young man tells Masters (Michael Sheen) that there is a hell, and Masters retorts that it can't be worse than St. Louis in August, which is not an inaccurate opinion.

I must admit that I found Masters of Sex just a bit tedious last season with a few remarkable episodes that kept me interested enough to ride through to the end. If for nothing else, it's a worthy watch for the exemplary work of Lizzy Caplan and Sheen, to say nothing of a litany of insightful, galvanic supporting performers. Sheen was recently seen in Far From The Maddening Crowd, and Caplan will next be seen in Joseph Levine's X-Mas, alongside Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and, oddly, Kanye West. Regardless, I will be turning in for the first few episodes of Masters of Sex Season 3, and am interested to see how these characters handle their increasing fame or, to an unsettling large contingency, infamy.

Masters of Sex Season 3 will premiere July 12th on Showtime at 10 p.m. Check out the key art and promo spot below:
