In today’s match-up of Superhero Smackdown it’s Batman vs … Jason Bourne? Matt Damon, star of the Jason Bourne films as well as the upcoming sci-fi picture The Martian, was having a bit of fun with reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival when asked how his sleeper assassin character would stack up against the caped and cowled comic book hero. It probably helps just a little bit that Damon’s best bud Ben Affleck happens to be the man behind the mask, because Damon pulled no punches.
In talking to E Online, Damon offered up his opinion on just where the DC superheroes would rank as compared to Jason Bourne. Damon’s currently shooting the fifth installment in the Bourne franchise, as evidenced in this first behind-the-scenes image. While it certainly looked like he was prepping for a rough-and-tumble fighting match, perhaps it was all just training to take on Affleck’s Batman:
“Jason Bourne would kick the shit out of Batman—absolutely! Batman’s gotta take on Superman first,” he added. “If he could beat him then maybe he could take on Jason Bourne.”
In other words, Batman currently isn’t even worthy of stepping into the ring with Bourne. In Damon’s opinion, Bats would have to defeat the Kryptonian with God-like powers before being considered on equal footing with the highly skilled assassin. Bold words, but all in good fun. Don’t hold your breath for a ‘Batman v Bourne’ movie anywhere outside of fan-fiction.
In related news, however, Damon was also asked if he’d heard Affleck’s bat voice just yet:
“I haven’t been like, ‘Come on, dude, just do it once,'” Damon said with a laugh. “I haven’t asked him to talk Batman yet, but now maybe I will.”
Stand by for Damon’s reaction to Batffleck’s voice in the coming months. In a parting comment, Damon also responded to the fact that he’s never played a comic book superhero, saying:
“I think they’re kind of out of superheroes,” Damon said. “Ben’s going to be like the sixth or seventh Batman, so I don’t think there’s really any left. So I’m good. Jason Bourne is my superhero.”
But back to the important stuff. Do you think Batman is worthy of taking on Bourne? If so, who would win? For my money, it’s at least a more cerebrally interesting challenge between top-notch strategists and hand-to-hand combatants.
