However you end up feeling about the Maze Runner movies, one director will shape them all. Unlike other major franchises, Maze Runner is sticking to one director for the entire series.

Last week, director Wes Ball basically told us that he was coming back for the third and final film in the series, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, but now Variety has confirmed that Ball is on board:

“Ultimately our goal is to create an awesome three-movie trilogy,” Ball told Variety at Tuesday night’s red carpet premiere of “The Scorch Trials” in New York. “Not many people have done that and now I have the opportunity to do that. I am directing the third film and we’ve already been busy preparing and working on the final conclusion of this saga.”

Ball added that there are certain things that get set up in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials that get paid off in the third film, and he’s grateful that he gets to finish what he started.

It’s rare that one direct gets to shape an entire franchise. While some may leave their stamp more than others, it’s great that Ball has been able to see Maze Runner through to the end (and that they’re not planning to split the final book into two parts and have the series overstay its welcome).

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opens this Friday. Maze Runner: The Death Cure opens February 17, 2017.
