TWILIGHT Director Catherine Hardwicke to Helm MAZE RUNNERS

     December 1, 2010

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) has made a name for herself when it comes to directing movies about teenagers, and she may be looking to do yet another film with teenage protagonists.  The Wrap reports that Hardwicke is in negotiations with 20th Century Fox to direct Maze Runners.

Based on the James Dashner’s novel The Maze Runner,  the story centers around Thomas, a young boy who wakes up with no memory (except for his name) to find himself surrounded by other boys his age. They live at the center of an ever-changing maze and must solve its riddles if they have any chance to escape. Hit the jump for more plot description and similar projects.

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls.

Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift.

Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers.

Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.

This franchise is merely the latest attempt to fill the void that will be left by Harry Potter when the final movie of the series hits the screens next summer. Maze Runners will be up against other adaptations such as The Hunger Games, Hovercar 3D, and I Am Number Four.
