The MCU and Star Wars are each massively popular franchises in their own right, but that’s not the only similarity between them. Telling tales of heroism and adventure in which archetypal heroes put everything on the line for the greater good, these are two series that appeal to audiences by pushing their protagonists to the limit, then bringing them back home again.

That’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise to notice that there is a fair amount of crossover in the personalities of the main characters of these universes. One story takes place across the multiverse and the other happens in a galaxy far, far away, but the central conflict of good versus evil remains very much the same. To that end, here are some characters in the MCU and Star Wars universes that have a lot more in common than you might think.

Groot - Grogu

Groot (Vin Diesel) and Grogu (David Acord) each hold the distinction of being arguably the most irresistible creatures in their respective franchises, but that is far from the only similarity between them. These two cuties are emotionally intelligent, immensely powerful, and loyal to a fault.

Both Grogu and Groot are easily underestimated due to their limited vocabulary and relative naivete, but don’t let those adorable faces fool you. When the chips are down and things look grim, these are the two characters who you’d want on your side. Though Din Djarin put his life on the line for Grogu, it was Grogu who saved him and many others at the end of The Mandalorian season 1 by deflecting fire from Stormtroopers, while Groot sacrificed his life for his friends by turning his body into a shield during the Battle on Xandar.

Vision - C3P0

C3P0 (Anthony Daniels) and the Vision (Paul Bettany) have a lot of surface traits in common, with both of them being by-the-book, anxiety-driven cybernetic creatures with charming British accents. They also share the distinction of being created by villains, with C3P0 being a pile of scraps that were pulled together by Anakin Skywalker while the Vision was developed by the evil Ultron.

The Vision might be a little more inclined to heroic acts than C3P0, but then again, he’s given a lot more chances to step up to the plate. One thing these two undeniably have in common, however, is their good intentions, prudent decision-making, and, unfortunately for them, a tendency to end up disassembled on the scrap heap while their friends scramble to bring them back to safety.

Loki - Lando Calrissian

Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) are two characters who are connected by their most negative traits — jealousy, manipulativeness, and greed. However, they are complicated antagonists who have tried to redeem themselves. To judge either of them by their worst moments would be a mistake as they have both shown themselves to be capable of incredible acts of heroism.

The upside of both characters is that they are each charming and more than capable of seeing the moral complexity of a given situation. While characters like Luke Skywalker and Captain America see the world in black and white, Loki and Lando are prone to sympathizing with the “other.” This gives them an important edge in their dealings with others and adds to their magnetic appeal. Both Loki and Lando are deserving of their Disney+ spinoff series.

Doctor Strange - Qui-Gon Jinn

As an accomplished and respected Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) was offered a place on the Council but felt that he would better serve the Force by staying in tune with its ebb and flow rather than adhering to the wishes of a political organization. Likewise, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is always available for a good old-fashioned team-up with the Avengers, but his highest loyalty is to his post as Sorcerer Supreme.

Both Qui-Gon and Stephen Strange come across as charming and even a bit flippant, but they are each informed by the heavy burden of past mistakes. Once ego-driven and brash, each was forced to temper their own impetuousness in order to justly wield their significant gifts. Likable but at times arrogant, their biggest enemies might always be themselves. Yet, there is no questioning their heroism, as each has shown no hesitation in putting their own lives on the line in defense of others.

Hawkeye - Han Solo

One of Hawkeye's (Jeremy Renner) most defining traits across the comics, animation, and film is that he is not a big fan of authority figures. That devil-may-care attitude and a need to play by his own rules are mirrored by one of Star Wars’ most beloved antiheroes-turned-heroes, Han Solo (Harrison Ford).

These are two characters who don’t take any guff and put on a combative exterior, but each of them found their happiness with quiet family life. Their gruff posturing fades away for each of them when Clint is on the phone with his wife, or when Han tenderly tells Leia that he loves her. Both Hawkeye and Han are willing to fight to the death for the people that they love, and that’s how they become trusted and valued members in their respective communities despite their rough edges.

Black Panther - Padmé Amidala

King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) became the ruler of Wakanda after the unexpected death of his father, leading to a tumultuous transition of power that formed the basis of the first Black Panther film. Meanwhile, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) was forced to make incredibly difficult political decisions when she was left in charge of the fate of the people of Naboo at a young age.

On the surface, both of these characters are calm, cool, and collected, but underneath that reason-based exterior is a complex inner life. Self-sacrificing and fair, these two will give anything for their people regardless of the personal cost. The heavy weight of leadership and the willingness to fight against insurmountable odds is what makes these two the perfect counterpart for one another. Indeed, both Padmé and T'Challa are better than most characters in their respective franchises.

Scarlet Witch - Anakin Skywalker

Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) was born in war-torn Sokovia, where she experienced unfathomable loss as a child when her hometown was destroyed by violent conflict. Losing her brother in Age of Ultron and then the love of her life, the Vision, in Endgame, she is a character defined by three things — the tragedies of her life, the incredible power she wields, and mostly, the protectiveness Wanda has over those she loves. That puts her in very much the same realm as Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), who likewise lost those he loved and accordingly lashed out at the world.

Though Wanda hasn’t exactly taken the plunge to villainy that Anakin ultimately does on his journey to becoming the evil Darth Vader, we saw that the possibility was there in WandaVision when she took over a town and forced them into a false reality that was under her control. Though fans hope that Wanda has seen the error of her ways, we’ve already seen how the pain of loss can drive her to extreme measures, which reminds us of a certain idealistic young Jedi.

Shuri - Leia Organa

Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright) sure have a lot in common. Each of them has incredible confidence and is fearless in the face of adversity, but they are motivated by a responsibility to their cause and their people. Seeking to expand and reach out beyond their own communities, these are two of the most heroic characters in fiction due to their selflessness, but it's their sense of humor and fun that made fans fall in love with them.

Both take no nonsense from others and refuse to be condescended to, stepping up into their respective positions with authority and confidence. Unafraid to call out those who stand in their way and possessed with a sense of righteousness well beyond their years, these are two characters born into privileged positions who commit to embodying the faith others put into them.

Black Widow - Din Djarin

With Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) taking her origin from a poverty-stricken family in Stalingrad, Russia, and the Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pablo Pascal) hailing from a war-based culture on the planet Mandalore, it might seem like two characters couldn’t be more different.

Yet, take a moment to examine their personalities, and it all clicks into place. Natasha is criticized in-story for being standoffish and cold, as is the Mandalorian. However, both were raised in environments where only the most cutthroat could survive. Given the chance, both reveal themselves to be huge softies underneath the tough facade, with Din taking on caretaker duties for the young Grogu and Natasha holding the Avengers together after “the Snap” led her teammates to struggle with their own mortality and the loss of their friends. Forced to grow up fast in a brutal world, these two have a lot of common ground.

Captain Marvel - Finn

Split image of Captain Marvel in the MCU and Finn in Star Wars

Finn (John Boyega) was pushed into the life of a Stormtrooper, but it wasn’t long before his idealism got the better of him and he threw in his lot with the Resistance, which he once believed was doomed to fail. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) was adopted into the Kree’s militaristic way of life only to find herself stranded on Earth and suffering from memory loss, suddenly at odds with those that claimed to be her allies.

Both of these characters know what it’s like to be used as weapons for organizations that saw them only as means to an end, and in each case, their sheer strength of will is what allowed them to become true heroes. Carol and Finn share one central character-defining trait — the willingness to question authority and stand by their convictions regardless of overwhelming pressure to conform.
