Bubbles might be the closest thing we ever get to an unvarnished Michael Jackson biopic. When enough time has passed, the Jackson estate might try to cash in on his legacy with a hagiography, and some esteemed actor will gun for an Oscar nomination by playing the King of Pop. But that movie might be in the shadow of Bubbles, which sounds like a far more fascinating look at a crucial time in Jackson’s life.

Written by Isaac Adamson, the Black List-topping script looks at Jackson’s life through the eyes of his pet chimpanzee, Bubbles. Bubbles was adopted from an Austin, Texas research facility and given residence at the Neverland Ranch in 1983. He stayed with Jackson and was a constant companion until he became overly aggressive and was sent to a monkey sanctuary in Florida. According to Deadline, "The script has been considered a very inventive way to tell an unauthorized story of Jackson without needing permission."

Now it looks like the film will have the added twist of being stop-motion animated. Deadline reports that Dan Harmon and his Starburns Industries production company intend to adapt the film in the style of their previous film, Anomalisa. It’s a bonkers approach for a bonkers script about a bonkers guy. I know stop-motion animation takes a while, but here’s hoping we don’t have to wait too long to see this movie.
