Jake Szymanski has been working on the comedy scene for a long time, directing shorts and segments for the likes of SNL and Funny or Die, and last year, he premiered his first feature-ish length work with HBO's very funny 7 Days in Hell. With Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, however, he enters a much bigger playing field and from the looks of the new red-band trailer for the film, he has a very promising future in directing comedies.

Given, most big-studio comedies don't require much in the way of formal acumen or decisive editing, and remain episodic for the most part, but there is something to the directorial finesse and sense of cherrypicking the best jokes. Compare something like the largely cohesive The Hangover to something like Ben Stiller's recent, repugnant Zoolander 2 and you'll see what I mean. In that sense, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates looks like a winner, boasting the impeccable central quartet of Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, and Workaholics breakout Adam DeVine. All the jokes in the trailer hit and allude to something like consistent laughs when the film is finally released, and the inclusion of supporting players as reliable as Stephen Root, Sugar Lyn Beard, and Veep breakout Sam Richardson does not hurt.
