Amazon Studios has announced the release date for the highly anticipated upcoming comedy Late Night, which was written by and stars Mindy Kaling. The film is now set to be released in theaters on June 7th, which makes it a bit of counterprogramming opposite Fox’s superhero film Dark Phoenix and Illumination’s animated sequel The Secret Life of Pets 2.

Directed by Nisha Ganatra, Late Night stars Emma Thompson as a veteran late night TV personality whose ratings are slipping and faces the prospect of being replaced, which spurs her to interact with her writing staff for the first time in decades. At the same time, having been called out for not having any women in her writers room, she hires Kaling’s character, which has unexpectedly hilarious consequences.

The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this past January, and I was lucky enough to catch it. It’s really funny, and Thompson gives a terrific performance in the vein of Meryl Streep’s turn in The Devil Wears Prada—I wouldn’t be shocked if she landed in the awards conversation later this year. There’s a bit of a wish-fulfillment romcom vibe to the whole thing, which isn’t a knock. There are certainly shades of Nancy Meyers in how the film comes together, but it also tackles issues like misogyny in the workplace with refreshing tact and nuance. It’s destined to be a crowdpleaser and that summer release date is a swell spot for it.
