During last night’s Olympics coverage on NBC, Disney unveiled a new extended TV spot for its upcoming animated feature Moana. The sweeping, sea-set adventure revolves around a teenager named Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) who sets out on a daring mission in the Pacific Ocean to become a master wayfinder, taking after her elders who thousands of years ago sailed the vast Pacific discovering the many islands of Oceania. Moana is quickly joined in her quest by the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), resulting in something of an ocean-set buddy adventure comedy.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has been on a roll as of late, and there’s no reason to believe Moana will mark the end of that streak. The studio is coming off the thematically ambitious Zootopia, which is now one of the highest grossing films of 2016, and is still basking in the glow of Frozen, which has become a bona fide cultural touchstone.

Longtime Disney filmmakers Ron Clements and Jon Musker (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid) direct Moana, and they enlisted Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda to help write and perform original songs for the movie, which may very well end up in Miranda EGOT-ing in a matter of months.

For now, check out the delightful new Moana TV spot that further teases this colorful adventure tale, along with a series of character posters. Moana opens in theaters on November 23rd.

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why.  From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auliʻi Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”) and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
