Earlier this summer, Pixar released the first trailers for Monsters University, the prequel to Monsters, Inc.  The trailers were cute, and they showed us how Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James "Sully" Sullivan (John Goodman) weren't always the best of friends.  During interviews for his upcoming film Parental Guidance, Crystal revealed some new details about the two monsters college days.  First, he explained that while the characters are now at college, they're still a little on the awkward side.  "They’re 17 and 18 years old in the script," Crystal tells EW. "My guy has a retainer, even."Hit the jump for what Crystal had to say about the plot.  The film also features the voices of Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray, and Peter Sohn.  Monsters University opens in 3D on June 21, 2013.monsters-university-movie-image-mike-sulley-1Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Crystal explained how the guys are in a frat-house, but it's not the coolest one on campus.

"[Mike and Sully] end up in the same fraternity where they have this scare competition — like Greek Games in college," says Crystal. "They have to mobilize a group, sort of like Revenge of the Nerds-monsters, and get them ready to be scary."

I wonder how they'll play the scare-as-power angle in the prequel, since the lesson from Monsters, Inc. is how laughter is far more powerful that screams.  Still, it sounds like a fun premise, and I hope Monsters University is a franchise continuation along the lines of Toy Story 2 rather than Cars 2.

Here's the official synopsis for Monsters University:

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.
