Filmmaker James Wan may or may not produce a reboot of Mortal Kombat that may or may not be happening. This according to a rumor from The Tracking Board, which claims the Furious 7 director is stepping in to help produce to new video game adaptation for New Line Cinema. However, Wan himself took to Twitter to fan the flames a bit:

Indeed, filmmakers at the level of Wan are developing numerous projects at any given time, and the reality of Hollywood is that only a small percentage of those will ever make it to theaters. So while the Mortal Kombat movie could happen and Wan might be the producer if and when it does, it’s important to note that this is simply a possibility at the moment, and the project is very much in the nascent stages.

And Wan certainly has his hands full. After the Saw and The Conjuring director made the jump to the action genre with Furious 7—a film that saw Wan handling the devastating death of star Paul Walker midway through production with grace, tact, and determination to finish the film as a tribute to the actor—Wan found himself courted for a number of high-profile projects. He had early on agreed to return and helm The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist for New Line, but in June Wan officially signed on for his next big project: Warner Bros.’ DC Comics Adaptation Aquaman. He’ll tackle that film after The Conjuring 2, which is set for release in June 2016, so his schedule is pretty stacked in the near future—which is yet another reason why folks shouldn’t get their hopes up about Mortal Kombat just yet.

The video game was previously adapted into a feature film by director Paul W.S. Anderson in 1995's fun yet forgettable Mortal Kombat, and then its even more forgettable 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Most recently, Warner Bros. issued a web series Mortal Kombat Legacy, inspired by Kevin Tanacharoen's short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth.
