Disappointment Blvd.

Joaquin Phoenix and Ari Aster

Ari Aster will be collaborating for the third time with A24 on the production and distribution of his latest film, Disappointment Blvd. Scheduled to be released before the end of 2022, this entry stars Joaquin Phoenix in a time-spanning character study of a mega-successful businessman. Disappointment Blvd. was filmed in mid-2021 and described as a comedy horror, which will depart from Aster's previous films, Hereditary and Midsommar.

The film's supporting cast includes Amy Ryan, Parker Posey, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. Aster is known for his inventive perspectives on the horror genre and has made some of the most commercially successful A24 releases, so the excitement around Disappointment Blvd.'s release later this year is already robust.

The Eternal Daughter

Joanna Hogg and Tilda Swinton

After distributing The Souvenir parts I and II, A24 will again partner up with British filmmaker Joanna Hogg to release her upcoming film, The Eternal Daughter. Hogg has once again cast Tilda Swinton, who appeared in both parts of The Souvenir and even worked with Hogg decades ago on her film school thesis, along with Carly-Sophia Davies and Joseph Mydel.

Much mystery surrounds the plot of The Eternal Daughter, but early announcements for the film describe it as a ghost story in which an aging mother and her grown daughter return to their former family home, where they are faced with dark secrets from their past. Hogg, a longtime respected yet underrated filmmaker, garnered incredible critical reception for The Souvenir Part II last year. Building on her growing notoriety, A24 could potentially release The Eternal Daughter this fall season to put the film in the running for awards contention over the next year.

Starring Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, and Aisling Franciosi, the film is set in an Irish fishing village where a mother grows torn between defending her son's deeds and alienating her tight-knit community. God's Creatures does not yet have a theatrical release date set, but the Irish drama will be premiering in the Director's Fortnight section at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

With its early summer release, movie-goers will have a unique and refreshing film to look forward to.

Men

This spring, British filmmaker Alex Garland, one of cinema's most exciting talents of recent years, will have his third feature, Men, distributed by A24 in the United States. Departing from his science-fiction mode on both Ex Machina and Annihilation, Men appears to be a quiet, unsettling horror film following a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to a remote English cottage following the unexpected death of her partner.

Men stars recent Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley with a supporting cast featuring Rory Kinnear and Paapa Essiedu. Garland's critically successful career heightens the anticipation around Men, along with the film's seemingly placid English sensibilities that are such a divergence from the director's other work. A24 will be premiering the film at Cannes Film Festival in the Director's Fortnight section just before the film's May 20th release in the United States.

Showing Up

Kelly Reichardt

Later in 2022, A24 will be handling the theatrical distribution of American filmmaker Kelly Reichardt's latest film, Showing Up. Transplanted from the Pacific Northwest, where Reichardt's previous works almost exclusively were filmed, Showing Up is set in New York City. The film stars Michelle Williams as a sculptor preparing for her budding career's most important art exhibition to date.

Showing Up marks the fifth collaboration between Williams and Reichardt, an influential filmmaker known for her astute works that meditate on modern American individuals and perspectives. Next month, Showing Up will be premiering at Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition, Reichardt's first appearance in the most prominent festival section. A24 will likely roll Showing Up out on the fall festival circuit later this year before releasing the film theatrically sometime during awards season.

After 2018's High Life, French filmmaker Claire Denis will partner with A24 for the second time to distribute her upcoming film, The Stars at Noon. Starring budding talents Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn, The Stars at Noon is set to be a romantic thriller centering around two English-speaking expatriates struggling to flee the Nicaraguan Revolution of the late 20th century.

As with her other films, including Chocolat, Beau Travail, and White Material, the colonial French African-raised Denis will likely use her latest film to excavate the toils of post-colonial countries and emphasize their ongoing struggles. The Stars at Noon will premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May, though A24 has yet to date the film's theatrical release.

The Whale

darren aronofsky

For his first movie in five years, subversive American filmmaker Darren Aronofsky will be collaborating with A24 on his upcoming film The Whale, which stars Brendan Fraser, Samantha Morton, and Sadie Sink. Recent details about The Whale make it seem like a total departure from the provocative ambitions of Aronofsky's last films mother! and Noah.

Fraser stars as Charlie, a father attempting to recover his relationship with his teenage daughter after he deserted his family life years before for his gay lover. With a narrative that sounds incredibly moving and emotional, A24 could be gearing up to launch The Whale this fall for a potential awards campaign for Aronofsky and Fraser.
