NBC Cancels ANIMAL PRACTICE, Replaces the Wednesday Time Slot with WHITNEY Starting November 14, Gives COMMUNITY the Cold Shoulder

     October 18, 2012

NBC has put down freshman comedy series Animal Practice, which will continue to air in its 8 pm slot on Wednesday nights until November 7th.  Starting November 14th, NBC, in the network’s infinite wisdom, has decided to start airing new episodes of Whitney.  There is no word yet on when fan-favorite and critical darling Community will return from limbo for its fourth season.  From the way NBC has handled their comedic properties, one would assume that Crystal the Monkey was in charge.  Clearly that’s not the case as Crystal would never cancel her own shows.  Hit the jump to get this sorted out.

THR reported on the canimal-practice-justin-kirkancellation of Animal Practice, a half-hour comedy series that focused on the men, women and animals of a veterinary practice.  The show starred Justin Kirk, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Kym Whitley, Betsy Sodaro, Bobby Lee, Tyler Labine, June Diane Raphael and, of course, Crystal the Monkey. Animal Practice started strong but has struggled as of late.  I’m not sure if this is a big loss for the comedic value of television as I’ve never seen an episode, but when a monkey is your highest-testing character, something is not working.  If you enjoy the show, you’ll be happy to know that they’re finishing out their run to end on November 7th.

Whitney, a sophomore comedy from creator, executive producer and star, Whitney Cummings, also starred Chris D’Elia and Rhea Seehorn.  The show was expected to return to television in a new Friday night slot starting October 19th, but now Whitney will make Wednesdays at 8 its new home starting November 14th.

That still leaves Community out in the cold. It’s possible that the Community College comedy won’t return until 2013, where NBC will have to fill the void left by 30 Rock.  It could be a good fit for a familiar show with a fanbase clamoring for its return.  As for Fridays in the interim, NBC will air re-runs of the first season of Grimm from 8-9pm on Fridays, which will lead into new episodes of the supernatural procedural.
