Keeping with the perspective that any Rogue One news is good news, let’s meet the newest addition to the Star Wars anthology film: evil R2-D2. Just kidding…kind of.

During this week’s edition of The Star Wars Show web series, Lucasfilm revealed the first look and details of the droid C2-B5. He (or, rather, it) is essentially a black-painted R2-D2 because, as we learn in the video shown below, both are part of the astromech droid family. Astromechs are utility droids used to maintain machinery, but C2 is utilized by the Empire.

So what role does it play in Rogue One? That part is unclear, but Star Wars Show host Peter Townley makes a note to mention that droids under Empire rule are frequently subjected to memory wipes in order to maintain their subservience. See C2 in the video (beginning at the 2:08 mark) and official photo from Lucasfilm below.

Sadly, C2 has its work cut out for it because we already have our new favorite droid and that’s Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO. He’s a security droid described by Rogue One director Gareth Edwards as “the antithesis of C-3PO,” and he didn’t have to do much to win us over. He said in the trailer, “The Captain says you are a friend. I will not kill you,” and that was it.

Other new characters showing up are Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, Diego Luna’s Captain Cassian Andor, Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe, Riz Ahmed’s Bodhi Rook, Ben Mendelssohn’s villainous Orson Krennic, and Mads Mikkelsen’s Galen Erso. Plus, we have some returning faces, even if one of them was an animated face: James Earl Jones as Darth Vadar and Forest Whitaker as The Clone Wars character Saw Gerrera.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will debut in theaters on December 16th.
