HBO has released the full Westworld Season 2 trailer. When we last left Westworld, Ford (Anthony Hopkins) and Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) had basically given the machines freedom, and they were going to use that freedom to wreak bloody havoc on the humans who had abused them for years. Season 2 picks up with Westworld and the Delos corporation going haywire, and judging by the trailer, the show is giving no sign of slowing down. It looks like there will be a mobile command center, Maeve (who is headed to Samurai World!) is still looking for her daughter, and Dolores it out for blood.

Westworld ended its first season as one of the most interesting shows on television, a program that was fully aware of how viewers now engage with long-form storytelling that became both a game and a commentary on how we treat entertainment both as stories and as games. I don’t know if season two can sustain that energy, but showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan have earned the benefit of the doubt. At the very least, more Maeve (Thandie Newton)!

The question with the new season is how will the show evolve after what could arguably be called an extended prologue. We knew, based on the show, that the machines would rise up, and the first season wisely delved into that mythology, but it also required a lot of slow world building. Now that we’re off to the races, Season 2 should be pretty thrilling, but I’m curious to see if they can still maintain the mystery (what was Ford building the basement?!).

Check out the Westworld Season 2 trailer below. The HBO series returns on April 22nd and also stars Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, and James Marsden.

Here’s the official synopsis for Westworld:

'Westworld' is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin. Season 2 premieres April 22 at 9PM.
