Open Road Films has released a new Nightcrawler clip from director Dan Gilroy’s upcoming psychological thriller, which was one of the best films I saw at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.  Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a sociopath who plunges into the depths of filming gruesome footage for local news, and begins pushing the limits between covering the news and making it.  The film has shades of Network and Taxi Driver, and you’ll get a little taste of the former in this new clip that finds Bloom pitching himself to a late night network news producer played by Rene Russo.  Their relationship in the film develops in delicious fashion, and I can’t wait to see the movie again when it opens on Halloween.

Here’s the official synopsis for Nightcrawler:

NIGHTCRAWLER is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling — where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.
