The good news: Ocean’s 8 is a reality. It has Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) directing, and an outstanding cast that includes Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and Awkwafina. Plus, Oceans Trilogy director Steven Soderbergh is on board to produce.

Now the bad news: Warner Bros. has announced a release date for the film, and while I thought that if they could get filming this year (shooting is expected to begin this month in New York), we might get it in theaters next year since it’s not like the Oceans movies have required lengthy, VFX-heavy post-productions.

But Warner Bros’ 2017 slate is pretty full, which means that we won’t be seeing Ocean’s 8 until June 8, 2018. Currently, its only competition is the Transformers Bumbleebee spinoff, but it might have some trouble staying afloat at the box office since the following weekend will see the release of Toy Story 4 and the weekend after that is Jurassic World 2.

That being said, the Ocean’s movies have been hits, this has a beloved group of actresses, and it’s got a solid plot: Bullock plays Danny Ocean’s sister, and with the help of her right-hand woman (Blanchett), she brings together a group of thieves to steal a necklace from the Met Ball in order to frame a villainous gallery owner. Sounds like an Ocean’s movie to me.

I can’t wait to see what Ross and his cast put together, but it looks like I’ll have to patiently wait until 2018. At least summer 2017 has female-driven action-comedies like…um…errr…sigh.
