After the teaser trailer that promised stylized backwoods insanity, WGN America has release a full trailer for their new Appalachia-set fringe society drama, Outsiders. Created by award-winning playwright Peter Mattei, the series plays on the tradition of the biker outlaw gang and follows the Farrell clan, a rugged family of mountain-dwellers who have thrived in the outskirts of society for 200 hundred years. Deeply engrained in their way of life, the Farrell’s find their lawless society at odds with the law itself when the government comes knocking on their door with an eviction notice.
As I’ve said many times on this site, WGN’s Manhattan is one of the best shows you’re not watching, and with Outsiders, the network has lined up another excellent cast for an idiosyncratic concept that seems to have a lot of passion and vision behind it. It’s got a real Sons of Anarchy meets Deliverance vibe and is one of the shows I’m most excited to see debut in 2016.
Here’s the cast and character breakdown, courtesy of WGN America: David Morse stars as Big Foster, a gruff and powerful heir to leadership; Joe Anderson is Asa, a member of the Farrell clan looking to rejoin the family after a stint with the outside world; Thomas M. Wright plays Sheriff Wade Houghton, a cop who has a history with the Farrells, and grapples with a few troubles of his own; Ryan Hurst as Lil Foster, a massive mountain man and son of Big Foster; Gillian Alexy as G’Winveer, a survivor and Asa’s confidante; Kyle Gallner as Hasil, an intuitive soul who feels rejected by the group; Christina Jackson as Sally-Ann, a beautiful girl from a mining town who is fascinated by the Farrells and Hasil in particular; Francie Swift as Haylie, a cunning, all-American community relations manager with the encroaching coal company; and Phyllis Somerville as Lady Ray, the regal yet tough leader of the Farrell clan.
Check out the full Outsiders trailer below. The series premieres on WGNA Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 9 p.m. ET.
Here’s the offcial Outsiders synopsis.
A struggle for power and control set in the rugged and mysterious hills of Appalachia, “Outsiders” tells the story of the Farrell clan, a family of outsiders who’ve been in these parts since before anyone can remember. Living off the grid and above the law on their mountaintop homestead, they’ll protect their world and defend their way of life using any means necessary.
