Pee-wee’s back! We recently reported that, after years of development, production was finally set to begin on the new Pee-wee movie. Today, proof has arrived that filming is indeed underway with the very first Pee-wee’s Big Holiday image. Produced by Judd Apatow, the film marks the feature debut of John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer) and finds Paul Reubens returning to his iconic role. In this new adventure, an encounter with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in what’s described as “an epic story of friendship and destiny.”

Pee-wee, of course, made his feature film debut in director Tim Burton’s first movie, the glorious Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. That was followed by a successful children’s television program, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, and then subsequently a less successful (but still admirably weird) feature film sequel Big Top Pee-wee. Reubens has been wanting to bring the character back to the big screen for years with the help of Apatow, and the duo finally found an outlet in Netflix. Pee-wee’s Big Holiday is yet another of the streaming service’s major film acquisitions, and it will be released exclusively on Netflix—though an official release date has yet to be announced.
