‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 3 Trailer: “Darkness Will Soon Be Upon Us”

     April 8, 2016

It’s the beginning of the end of days in the new Penny Dreadful Season 3 trailer. Vanessa (Eva Green) is being treated in an insane asylum by an unconventional doctor, while newcomer Kaetenay (Wes Studi) muses about an apocalyptic darkness that’ll rise up and swallow all life. Yeah, it’s pretty dreadful stuff.

The new season premieres on Sunday, May 1st, at 10 p.m. EST on Showtime. Kaetenay, a Native American, shares a special connection with the werewolf Ethan (Josh Harnett), who seemingly teams up with Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) to help Vanessa in her hours of need. But the darkness is felt by all, and in some cases it’s seen. The foreboding premonition of sorts seems to suggest a vampiric darkness as the forces of the dark lord multiply and feed.

Also seen returning in the Season 3 trailer are Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Billie Piper (Brona Croft), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), Frankenstein’s monster (Rory Kinnear), and the former Cut-Wife (Patti Lupone), with Lupone in a new role. The crop of newcomers include Shazad Latif as Dr. Henry Jekyll, Christian Camargo (Dexter) as zoologist Dr. Alexander Sweet, Sam Barnett (Jupiter Ascending) as Dr. Seward’s mysterious secretary, Jessica Barden (Far From the Madding Crowd) as Lily’s young acolyte named Justine, and Perdita Weeks (The Tudors) as a scholar of the supernatural named Catriona Hartdegan.

Here’s the official plot synopsis.

<blockquote>This season on PENNY DREADFUL, Tony® Award-winning star Patti LuPone (American Horror Story), who guest starred last season as the Cut-Wife, returns as a series regular in the new role of Dr. Seward, an American therapist who treats Vanessa (Eva Green) with an unconventional new approach.
