Shut It Down: Animated PEZ Movie in the Works

     August 3, 2015

Studios and producers are snatching up the rights to just about every popular property out there regardless of its big screen potential, so why should we be surprised that there’s an animated movie about PEZ Candy in the works over at Envision Media Arts? According to an official press release, EMA struck a deal with PEZ Candy, Inc. to make a movie about the candy dispensers with Lee Nelson and David Buelow on board to produce and Cameron Fay penning the script.

Here’s what Nelson had to say about the project:

PEZ Candy is beloved by children and adults alike, with Cameron Fay we’ve created a world unique to Pez and a story that will touch the hearts of many.”

I guess we’ll have to take his word for it because I most certainly cannot imagine a “world unique to PEZ” or a story about PEZ “that will touch the hearts of many.” The press release also goes as far to call PEZ an “interactive candy that is both enjoyable to eat and fun to play with.” Sure, you do have to load the dispenser and flip the head back to snag a piece, but calling it an “interactive candy” is pushing it. And who played with PEZ dispensers? I had a lot of friends who collected them, but none who played with them like one might play with an action figure.

Like the recently announced Emoji movie, I’ve got absolutely no clue how Fay and EMA will possibly pull a worthy narrative out of a plastic candy dispenser. Fay’s first feature, Brothers in Law, is shooting right now so there’s really no assessing his potential to work some serious magic and turn this into a viable film. But again, folks are acquiring the rights to just about everything right now. For all we know, EMA wanted to get ahold of PEZ before anyone else and the project will wind up going nowhere.
